What is a Co-operative Nursery School?

We are a non-profit, parent-oriented co-operative. In a co-operative, everyone participates in the running of the school. As a parent, you are given the opportunity to participate in your child's first school experience through volunteer duty days, volunteer responsibilities and fundraising.

Each family contributes to the daily running and maintenance of the school. Parental involvement is not merely suggested, but required! The benefits of running a co-operative program are many:

Our Philosophy

At Complex Co-operative Nursery School teaching is about motivating, providing guidance, structure and encouragement, being a positive influence and building self-esteem.
We believe that children learn best when confident, understood, respected, engaged, and interested.
As teachers we are role models, observers, and leaders.
Our goal is to ensure that each child is given the opportunity to engage in a jouney of lifelong learning in a safe and nurturing environment.

Activities

At Complex Co-operative Nursery School our ECE qualified teachers have worked hard for many years developing a socially and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Programs involve a variety of learning centres: reading, construction, crafts, drama, gross motor skills, and science, as well as daily circle time and a music program. The older children also partake in a school readiness program. We host many special visitors throughout the year, and also learn about and celebrate many different cultural events.

We believe variety is a key to learning. During multi-cultural week the children learn about the different countries and cultures that we share. To coincide with the Winter Olympics we held our own 2-week Olympic games, finishing with a special closing ceremony. Our trip to outer space including a "trip to the moon" in a rocket ship made by the children was a real blast! During our indoor camping trip, in which the children paddled in their very own canoe, they experienced the joys of camping. Trips have included a wagon ride, a trip to Impact Zone to compliment our unit on Healthy Living (exercise, good food and staying safe), a trip to an Alpaca farm and neighbourhood walks to observe the changing seasons. At the end of each year we hold a special graduation ceremony.

At complex Co-operative Nursery school friends are made for life.
